NZC Achievement Objective:  Know groupings with five, within ten, and with ten.

Learning Observed

During iDevelop Ashvir has been learning to solve simple problems by making sets and patterns of numbers up to ten. In this activity the following problem was given: Five frogs live in a pond, if 2 frogs are on a rock, how many                   frogs are in the water? Ashvir initially used counters and circles to move his counters between the ‘rocks’ and ‘water’, however he was soon able to find other ways to split the frogs into groups without the help of circles. Following on from this activity, Ashvir was asked to find as many different combinations of frogs in the pond as he could. Finally, Ashvir looked at the equations that these word problems were meaning.  He was able to recognise that the two groups could be added together to total 5.

Evidence of learning

Here Ashvir has split his ‘frogs’ by having 4 in the water and 1 on a rock.

During this learning, Ashvir demonstrated that he was: Connected - actively taking part in learning conversations and activities. Capable - understanding that numbers can be split in a number of different ways. Collaborative - participating and assisting others in learning activities. Managing Self  - able to use equipment in an appropriate manner.

Use your number splits to solve simple problems. Split other numbers into two groups and look at the equations they make.

iExperience Narrative Assessment - 10 August 2016

NZC Achievement Objective:  Students will gain knowledge, skills, and experience to understand that people have different roles and responsibilities  as part of their participation in groups.

Learning Observed

As part of our iExperience Ashvir opted in to learn more about the equestrian show jumping at the Olympic Games in Rio. Ashvir has shown that he can work collaboratively with others to help build a show jumping circuit fit for Olympic horses.  Firstly he had to communicate his ideas with other members in the group to ensure there was a range of difficulty levels for the horses.  He was able to do this with ease and showed great respect for others learner’s opinions. Next Ashvir designed and built a jump to be used within the show jumping circuit.  After this he discussed and negotiated the route that the horse would take in order to complete the circuit within a specified time limit.

Here Ashvir is designing a route to be run by the horses in the Olympic show jumping.

During this learning, Ashvir demonstrated that he was: Connected - actively taking part in all learning activities. Capable - understanding that Olympic show jumping has specific needs. Collaborative - discussing and negotiating ‘best fit’ jumps and tracks. Managing Self  - able to use equipment in an appropriate manner.

Ashvir Gets Technical

Narrative Assessment - iExplore - 12 May 2016

Learning Observed

This morning, the Learners were invited to use the ‘Zoom Tool’ to create an object of their choice.   This equipment is new to our Learning Habitat and Ashvir enjoyed being able to take the time to explore how to connect the sticks together to make different shapes.  He watched what others were making and trialled making different objects.

Evidence of learning

Ashvir used the ‘Zoom Tool’ to create a spinner.  It took several attempts to get it right so that it would spin properly.  He enjoyed testing it out on the table top and sharing it with the other Learners who were keen to try it out.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Ashvir connected with others around him to work out how to use the Zoom Tool and construct his spinner.   This activity encouraged him to think about what he wanted to make and how to connect the pieces together.

Ashvir's Lego Habitat

Narrative Assessment - iExplore - 23 Mar 2016

Learning Observed

Today during iExplore Ashvir came to show me a car he had been creating as part of his Exploration in the morning. He told me that he had made it with Shohrullah. Ashvir showed me the controls of the car and the person in charge of driving it. Later I noticed he was adding a ladder on it “so the people can go up”.

Evidence of learning

Ashvir knew that cars needed wheels and controls. I wonder what other parts of a car he knows?

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Ashvir worked Collaboratively on this with another learner. He was Participating and Contributing in order to create this. Ashvir was able to Manage Himself in order to create his car without getting distracted.

How can he modify the car so that it has more parts of a real car? Share learning with home.

Narrative Assessment - 10 Feb 2016 - Writing

Learning Observed

Today I invited the Learners to write a story about something they could be doing. We practised writing “I am” and finding the words on the word card. We then talked about finding the initial letter of what we wanted to write about. Ashvir then went off by himself to write his own story. He wrote “I n m s” (I am playing soccer).

Evidence of learning

Ashvir recorded down the initial sounds that he heard.  I wonder if he has practised his writing in the holidays?

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Ashvir is developing his Capabilities in Writing. He was able to work by himself to write a story (Managing Self). Ashvir is starting to form his letters correctly and listen to the sounds they make when recording them (Using Language, Symbols and Text). He was able to Think of his own story and write it down.

Continue to teach finding the basic words on the word card. Continue to teach using the word card to find sounds to record for a story. Share learning with home.
